Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa

Out at half seven, gone by eleven

A small bakery that makes a small amount of everything. Walk in for pastry, order the bread ahead, and give us three days for a cake.

The counter at Almond & Rye first thing in the morning

Three ways to get something

  • No notice needed

    Walk in

Pastry, baguette, cake by the slice. From 7:30, Tuesday to Sunday, until it runs out.

    What is on today
  • 24 hours’ notice

    Pre-order

Bread and pastry boxes, ordered ahead and collected in a window you choose.

    How pre-order works
  • 72 hours’ notice

    A cake made for you

Six flavours, four sizes, and a conversation about what it is for.

    Custom cakes

Why the bread is pre-order

Because a sourdough loaf takes twenty-four hours and we would rather bake what is spoken for than throw away what is not. Order by four in the afternoon and it is on the shelf with your name on it the next morning.

Pre-order bread
  • Country Loaf900 g loaf
  • Dark Rye800 g loaf
  • Seeded Sourdough900 g loaf

Fourteen things. It changes twice a year and not on a Tuesday.

The full menu
  • Morning pastry

Laminated the day before, baked from six. Out at 7:30 and mostly gone by eleven on a Saturday.

  • Bread

One starter, kept since the shop opened. Loaves are pre-order — see below for why.

  • Sweet things

Made in small numbers in the afternoon for the next morning. When the tray is empty that is the day.

  • Pantry

The things people ask for at the till, on a shelf by the door.

Come in

On Beechwood, past the bridge. Closed Monday, and the good stuff goes early.
